Simple things

One of the things I enjoy in life is the feeling of being clean and fresh after a hot shower. Due to financial problems, our gas was cut off about a week ago. I’ve had to make do with heating water on the stove to wash my hair, then finish the rest with very cold water in the shower. It works, but it sucks.

At least we have water. After Hurricane Andrew in August of 1992, we didn’t have any water for bathing. But it rained every afternoon. So I would put on my swimsuit, and stand under the downspout and wash my hair and shower. One day I had a small bucket of water, and shaved my legs while sitting on the porch. You do what you have to do.

In February of 1994, we were living in Woodside, Delaware. We got hit with a bad ice storm. It knocked our power out, so no heat. But it also knocked our electric water pump out as well. We couldn’t shower, or even flush the toilet. I went outside and scraped up ice and snow, and melted it on our gas stove to flush the toilet. I wonder if our landlord every noticed there were pine needles in the toilet tank. Lol.

We take alot for granted, but access to water and a hot shower is a blessing. Thankfully our gas is getting turned back on Monday. I can’t really bitch, because at least we have indoor plumbing. Sometimes you need troubles like this to remind you of what is really important, and to enjoy the things you do have.
